Correration Coefficients between Disturbance Indexes and Updraft Associated with Lightning Discharges Observed by Two Kinds of Radars and Safir

چکیده

The millimeter-wave radar observations of wintertime thunderstorms are compared with the Cband radar observations at Mikuni, Fukui. The difference between their echo intensities and the correlation between differential radial velocity and disturbance index are discussed in light of prediction of lightning discharges. The comparatively lower values of the millimeter-wave radar for the intense echo range seem to be effective to discriminate the increase of graupel particles in the cloud core that may produce lightning strokes. Also, the disturbance index shows a very high correlation coefficient with the convergence of horizontal velocity, being indicative of convective air motion as well.

On polarimetric radar signatures of deep convection for model evaluation: columns of specific differential phase observed during MC3E.

The representation of deep convection in general circulation models is in part informed by cloud-resolving models (CRMs) that function at higher spatial and temporal resolution; however, recent studies have shown that CRMs often fail at capturing the details of deep convection updrafts. With the goal of providing constraint on CRM simulation of deep convection updrafts, ground-based remote-sens...

A Study of Winter Thunderstorms in the Hokuriku

For about a century, studies concerning summer thunderstorms in the middle latitude zone have elucidated data on both their meteorological and electrical features. By contrast, winter thunderstorms have been studied only for the last few decades. For both reasons of scientific interest and the practical purpose of preventing serious damage by winter thunderbolts to aircrafts and electric power ...

Kinematic and Microphysical Significance of Lightning Jumps versus Non-Jump Increases in Total Flash Rate.

Thirty-nine thunderstorms are examined using multiple-Doppler, polarimetric and total lightning observations to understand the role of mixed phase kinematics and microphysics in the development of lightning jumps. This sample size is larger than those of previous studies on this topic. The principal result of this study is that lightning jumps are a result of mixed phase updraft intensification...

Multi-wavelength Radar Observation of Wintertime Thunder Clouds Related to the Polarity of the Lightning Discharges

Time, location, and polarity of lightning discharges in wintertime thunderstorms are discussed in light of horizontal and height distribution of radar echoes observed by C-band and millimeter-wave radars. The core of the radar echoes that produced a number of positive-current cloud-to-ground discharges in a few minutes tends to be found near a comparatively lower cloud top of 2-3 km heights, su...

Using CASA IP1 to Diagnose Kinematic and Microphysical Interactions in a Convective Storm

Data from the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) Integrated Project I (IP1) network of polarimetric X-band radars are used to observe a convective storm. A fuzzy logic hydrometeor identification algorithm is employed to study microphysical processes. Dual-Doppler techniques are used to analyze the 3D wind field. The scanning strategy, sensitivity, and low-level scanning foc...
